rFactor and other racers

Postby museumsteve » Fri Dec 21, 2012 4:13 pm

Hi everyone
I built a home race sim with motion and tactile and now I'm starting to look at other additions.
I reckon amBX could be a good product for me..and was pretty chuffed when I started researching and saw an announcement about rFactor being confirmed...yet it doesn't show on any game lists I found as supported officially. Did it get ditched?

It's not a question of amBX supporting rFactor but if rFactor supports amBX... the amBX coding needs to be added to the game/process so that amBX picks it up and reacts appropriately.

lol..symantics
My point was that it was previously announced that Philips ambx and rfactor developers (ISI) had confirmed a deal.

Since that day a lot of things have changed: First of all, amBX isn't a trademark of Philips anymore - so in a first step amBX was founded as an independent company, and Philips "only" created hardware that used the amBX technology and licenses. Afterwards, Philips even stepped back from creating hardware, thus we see MadCatz hardware today.

Of course, all this doesn't help you as a customer - and I cannot give you any answer whether the support by rFactor was dropped. Maybe the rFactor support/developers should be able to tell you.

Oh, by the way, a good racer with amBX support is ToCA Race Driver 3. It has full amBX support (fans, rumble and light) and was delivered with the old Philips premium set. Maybe you can grab a copy somewhere.

Does Toca have to be an amBX enabled version?

Not as far as I know. I bought it from Steam (it isn't available there anymore yet unfortunately), and it had amBX support.

Thanks mate :)

I got my first Philips kit (have 3 ordered) and installed like a charm. I'm looking forward getting to grips with it and will certainly be around here a lot more :)

rFactor did support amBX, that was a long time ago - back when we were working with Philips. I don't know if the latest versions have support for it but it used to be free to download so worth a try if so. It will probably work with the automatic effects if not with built in code.

Toca was also a fully supported game as sold on the the disc. There were some patches I seem to remember which may be available still on the Codemasters site.

Thanks for the reply mate.
I got my second starter kit today.
Using amBX has prompted me to look at making changes to my racing rig. I'll post some pics etc in the near future :)

Looking forward to seeing it!

The reason we first worked with rFactor was that it was being used at CES by IBM on their stand - they had two real Williams F1 cars with screens mounted in front of them and the controls linked to the game. To this they added amBX lighting all round......it was very cool. Visitors could sit in the cars and drive them round various tracks in the game.

I'll see if I can find any pictures......

Oops - it was Intel not IBM  and pictures aren't that great but you get the idea. There was a very long queue to have a go right through CES.

Though you might not be able to get hold of the actual F1 cars I expect you can make an even better simulation experience at home!

That's much better than ours!!

Look forward to seeing it with the lighting.

Don't know what your budget is like but we do also have a pro solution which controls DMX lighting, allowing use of much higher power commercial lighting. We do have a small number of beta user kits - you get the system at a much reduced cost in return for feedback and testing of new stuff. A good pro surround set-up will probably cost £2-3K but if you (or anyone else) are interested to discuss please PM me.
