Key Features: amBX Light-Scene Engine, immersive experience, lighting reacts with mood, audio and video settings, automatic pre-set to allow non-technical staff to use with ease
Osborne Technologies develop solutions for schools and the wider education market. Their Sensory Room solutions are designed to be indoor or outdoor rooms for special needs care providers looking for an effective facility where space is at a premium.
BRIEF
To create a human-centric lighting environment using light as a critical element. Osborne Technologies required a dynamic and powerful lighting control system that would seamlessly integrate into their products.
SOLUTION
An amBX lighting control system is installed in every Sensory Pod and Sensory Room; it controls the colour LED lighting in conjunction with mood settings and with audio and video content. The system works automatically to pre-set experience settings, allowing non-technical staff to use the whole system with ease.
Some examples:
Frederick Bird Primary – Immersive Room
Frederick Bird Primary is a mainstream school located in Coventry. The school wanted an immersive environment to deliver engaging learning experiences for all pupils, which could reinforce the curriculum and promote creative thinking. The existing space was a former library. Our design included the installation of a stitched projection solution, using 4 high-end projectors and stitching software. Immersive Lighting is responsive to the projected content. A large-format touch screen uses intuitive software which allows staff to create bespoke content for learners. Environmental elements are also used to support learning, these including; wind machine, multi-scent delivery, under-floor vibration, temperature control (air-conditioning), and a smoke machine. All controlled via our bespoke Room Command solution using an app installed on an Apple iPad.
Birkett House School
House School is a Special School in Leicester for pupils from 3 to 19. The Birkett House project included 3 rooms, 2 Immersive Spaces, and 1 Sensory Room as part of a new build school project. The old school had 2 traditional sensory spaces but wanted to create a space within the new school that was more engaging and provided separate zones within the larger space. Each zone contains sensory equipment to engage learners including, light, sound, touch, and scent. The zones are operated independently or as part of the whole room. There was also a requirement for bespoke cushioned wall padding, low-level bedding, and seating for users to be accessed via the ceiling-mounted hoist.
RESULT
Entering a sensory room is akin to leaving the world you know behind and instantly travelling to any place of your choosing. Take pupils to unreachable places on adventures that will stimulate the imagination, increase engagement and aspiration.
Pupils with SEN find a haven inside the sensory rooms. They create an escape from stressful situations and provide engaging learning opportunities that adapt to individual needs.
The SensoryPod and Sensory Room now provide easily accessible support for a wide range of needs, including SEN and challenging behaviour, disability access in public places and leisure parks, dementia support, and care.
TESTIMONIALS
“The SensoryClass is having a huge impact on our students. it allows us to give students experiences that books and the internet just can’t deliver. Students now write from experiences and memories and we are seeing above expected results in Year 2 and Year 6.
It may be a small room but it allows us to take a big look at the world!”

“At Sanctuary Supported Living’s Sidegate Lane Nursing Home we look after 24 residential patients who have a range of different mental health and support needs but in particular we work to support advanced dementia care. This often manifests itself in aggressive physical outbursts that can be challenging to deal with for the individual and staff.
We wanted to create a sensory room that would work as an anger management space to help control a situation but also an activity room that would distract or engage the individual before they reached crisis point. Osbornes came in and transformed an old activities storage room into a facility that can capture the attention and imagination of residents with severe dementia who need stimulating or calming.
This is an excellent way to prove a tranquil, calming environment for them.”

“The SensoryPod was purchased as a modern alternative to a Sensory Room. A standalone building, individually tailored to create a bespoke, self-contained multi-sensory environment in one single package. It offers value for money as it is a room within a room this is a very practical and cost-effective solution to space constraints. This makes it an attractive option for many other public business and leisure providers looking to become more inclusive with their provision.
The Aiming high Business Unite cannot suggest any improvements to the company and have enjoyed working with them.“
